About this product
Before Tenor Saxophonist Turk Mauro fully relocated to Paris, France in 1991, he was working on a special project an album of ballads that were not always played as ballads. In 1988 he began recording this project for Bloomdido Records, a French independent tag, run by Jacques Charmeteau. Charmeteau had the insight to record several albums by Mauro, featuring his brother, drummer Ron Turso in various settings. For this first time digital , Soul Kid Jazz brings you InchLove SongsInch, digitally cleaned up and remastered for 2022 so that lovers of ballads and straight ahead jazz music can hear this Saxophone master, perhaps for the first time. The story of this album has a rather melancholy tale attached to it, as the mother of Turk and Ron, Angelica, lay dying in a hospital in Florida, USA. The brothers had been booked for a tour of France, and they were unsure if they should depart or not, but their amazing mom told the brothers, InchGo and knock 'em out boys!Inch And so they went on the tour, along with their high school pal, Hammond Organ great Bobby Forrester, and unfortunately Angelica passed while they were out on the road. Upon learning this terrible news, Turk decided it was time to stay in Paris and finish up the Love Songs project. Charmeteau brought them into Sun Studio, and what transpired is a profoundly heartfelt dedication to Angelica Turso, who had passed away on January 15th, 1990. The session was recorded only 3 days later. On this entire album, specially on InchCome Back to SorrentoInch Turk pours his heart and soul into the music, as he says goodbye to her in song. Rounding out the personnel, on the earlier session is the great pianist Jimmy Rowles, who also blesses us with some vocals on InchDo You Know Why Stars Come Out at NightInch. Another interesting feature is the very rare Ellington chestnut InchUntil TonightInch, which was a Ben Webster f

In 1991 Tenor and Baritone saxophonist Turk Mauro was living in Paris, France, trying his luck as the classic expatriate American Jazz Man. From what I understand, he had some epic times out that way, and at least 3 recordings document his Parisian adventures, at least musically speaking. The third of these was a sort of an Inchin-studioInch Jazz Party Turk entitled InchJazz PartyInch, which we have updated for specificity, to Parisian Jazz Party. This was only distributed on a very small scale, and never really made it into the digital age. But, this is one of our goals at Soul Kid Jazz, to bring you some classic work you may have otherwise missed entirely. This great music needs to be heard in 2022 and beyond. On this particular outing, we have Tenor and Baritone Sax master Turk Mauro featured on a classic set of straight ahead Jazz at one of Paris's best rooms, Le Petit Opportun, in 1987. French musicians Francois Laudet, Jeannot Rabeson, and Michel Gaudry round out the rhythm section, with the addition of Mauro's expert brother also on Drums for there of the tracks. Three of the songs are Mauro originals, with some standard fare, as well as some good old Bop, like Blue 'n Boogie and Hy Fly. Paris would never be the same!

Tenor and Baritone Saxophonist Turk Mauro didn't lack for credentials during his career. He'd gigged with such diverse jazz artists as Henry InchRedInch Allen, Zoot Sims, Al Cohn, Billy Mitchell, Dizzy Gillespie, Buddy Rich, and Richie Cole. Critics were taking note of Mauro's robust style. W. Royal Stokes, writing in the Washington Post, called him Incha swinger with his feet in the old school but with ideas out of the bop era and later.Inch And, in a New York Post review, Richard M. Sudhalter described Mauro's playing as Inchpassionate and swinging.Inch On this outing, which represented his second ever album as a leader (Phoenix Jazz Records LP 1004), Mauro had finally come into his own, with producer Bob Porter as the organizing director. It is with his permission, we have re-released this classic, which has never before been available on either CD nor digital formats. His interpretation of some jazz standards, some originals and even an original vocal number, are brought vividly to life with a crispy recording engineered by the legendary Malcom Addey and Rudy VanGelder, with the help of Turk's swinging brother on drums, special guest Alto Saxophonist Richie Cole, along with guitarist Joe Cohn (son of Al Cohn), pianist Barry Keiner, and bassist Peter Barshay. It was recorded in Nola Studios, New York City in 1981. Heavyweight! Is a session that cooks from start to finish and simply must be heard in 2019!
