A: Hi Chris, Yes, part #9 is structurally required in the build of this TV stand as it supports the top. The only optional parts (that are okay to be removed) are the three adjustable shelves.
Q: how many dvd's do the lower shelves (behind the doors, etc) hold?
A: Hi Melissa, thank you for your question! While I can't speak to the exact size of your DVD collection, I can tell you what the space is behind the doors and give you my best guess (FYI, I'm referencing the dimension drawing included in the photos of this listing if you want to see this in context). The dimensions of the middle lower shelf is 12-3/4" D x 21-1/8" W and 9-7/8" H. The shelves behind the doors are 12-3/4" D x 12-1/2 W x 9-7/8"H. Assuming your DVD collection is made up of "Standard" DVD cases @ 7.48" H x 5.31" D x 0.55" W, I believe you could fit 38 DVD cases side by side if you only do one row. With the depth of the shelf at 12-3/4", you have space to put two rows of 38 DVDs... bringing you up to 76 cases. Looking to really maximize your space? Let's try stacking some horizontally. You can go 4 standard DVD cases above those already stacked, bringing you to 8 if you do two rows. You can then easily fit another set of 8, but will be an inch shy to get a third. While not as asthetically pleasing, you can put a third row horizontally if you were to change the orientation, but it would only fit 4. TOTAL for the lower main compartment, if you really utilized the whole space is about 96 or so. Following the same logic, you could fit 22 in one row. 44 then if you made a second row, and then if you went horizontally on top, you could fit 4 more. There wouldn't be enough space to change orientation and and four more, unlike the middle section. That brings you to 26 each on the lower outside section. (26 x 2)+96 = 148 total stand size DVDs on the bottom shelves. Hopefully that helps! I apologize if the numbers aren't even close-- this really was a guess without knowing your DVD collection and how you prefer to organize your DVDs. I wish you the best of luck here, thank you!
