Epson with a stellar 4K home theater projector!

The Epson Home Cinema LS5000 4K Laser Projector is a super solid home theater projector. Not loud, easy setup, great picture! It has 2 HDMI ports, (one with eARC that works extremely well with a Google Chromecast) a network port, a 3.5mm audio out, and a USB port that can do 2A, so most streaming dongles will be able to be powered by that port. I didn’t notice that it does not have built-in speakers, but that is not an issue. Using eARC you can connect a high end system, or you can do bluetooth to a cheaper soundbar or bluetooth speaker. You also have the option to use the 3.5mm jack, but that will limit your channels to stereo. The picture is absolutely phenomenal. You may need to step up to another model if you have an extra bright room, but the 2500 peak lumens are plenty bright enough for watching Bluey with my daughter, or during the day on weekends I can catch lots of football! HDR stuff looks great, colors are fantastic, but it did take some tuning to get the brightness and contrast correct for my setup. Overall, a top notch 4K projector that puts Epson in a more “value” category!

Work for Projection Mapping but also Good Projectr

With the holidays coming up, I've been looking at a few different projectors for outdoor projection mapping. So when the opportunity came up to try the Epson EH-LS5000 4K laser projector, I jumped at the chance. The LS5000 is rated at 2,500 lumens for both color and white brightness. Ideally, you'd want at least 3,000 lumens for outdoor projection mapping, so I was curious to see how well the LS5000 would perform for what I had planned. Design and Setup The LS5000 is one of the larger projectors I've owned. Its size reminds me more of Epson's business projectors than a typical home entertainment projector, so you'll definitely want to consider how much space you have available. Focus, lens shift, and zoom are all adjusted manually, which I personally don't have an issue with. However, I did find that the sweet spot for getting the picture perfectly focused is pretty narrow. It's easy to overshoot it and end up with a slightly blurry image, so you'll want to take your time with that adjustment. Keystone correction is handled digitally, but Epson makes it pretty straightforward with a dedicated "Geometry" button on the large remote. Mine needed some adjustment to the upper-left corner right out of the box, but it was simple enough to correct. Overall, the LS5000 gives you plenty of flexibility to get the picture properly aligned for your particular setup. Picture Quality Picture quality is definitely one of the LS5000's strong points. Since my primary interest was using it for holiday projection mapping, with the occasional backyard movie night on a 100-inch-plus screen, I was particularly interested in how well it could reproduce fine details. I was impressed with how clean and crisp the picture looked. Small details in the content were easy to make out, and the colors were vibrant. The 4K resolution really helps when you're projecting onto a large surface, where imperfections in the image can become much more noticeable. I'm not going to say that a 4K projector can compete with a 4K OLED television in every aspect of picture quality, especially when it comes to contrast and black levels. However, in terms of image sharpness and detail, the LS5000 does a great job. As expected, the viewing environment makes a noticeable difference. The picture looks it's best with low ambient lighting, which is something to keep in mind if you're planning to use it outdoors or in a room with a lot of natural light. Pros: Sharp and detailed 4K picture Vibrant colors Flexible picture alignment and adjustment Dedicated Geometry button makes adjustments easier Cons: Performs best in low-light environments Larger footprint than some home entertainment projectors Manual focus takes a little patience to get just right

Epson Home Cinema LS5000 4k Laser Projector

I've spent a lot of years with Epson projectors. When I first started my home theater journey 25 years ago, Epson was my initial go to. I've spent a lot of time early in life with the Home Cinema line of products. For my daily driver now a days, I've reached a point in my experience and preference where only the most elite of devices end up in my dedicated theater. I mention this to give context to both my experience with Epson projectors, why I feel this one lands where it does. The LS5000 line, while that may sound like a large and impressive number, actually falls near the bottom of Eposon's current product offering. This is a budget, entry level projector that will be good for many people, and likely targeted by people who are either buying their first projector and need a stepping stone product, or someone more concerned with image size than image quality and has a very strict budget. This isn't to say the LS5000 is bad, it's actually a good projector. It is just that projectors fall into an interesting category in display technology that bring a lot of "flaws" with them. Many of which are now resolved in the higher end, more elite projector market. For the general consumer, lower tier, lower cost realm. Unfortunately, projectors don't often bring as much to the table as a TV would. At least from a pure image quality perspective. The LS5000 is 3LCD technology. I won't go into detail what that means, there is plenty of information that can be researched on what 3LCD is. You will find tho, this is aging technology and bring many of the flaws that plague projectors today. Essentially, this is a transparent LCD panel, with a really bright light shining through it. It has all the flaws of an LCD panel (image blur, blooming, ghosting, clouding, poor black levels). What Epson has done with the LS5000 tho, is modernize this 3LCD technology by adding a laser light instead of the traditional lamp. This brings many benefits. Most importantly, longevity and maintenance free operation for a very long time. It also runs cooler, so the projector does not have to run it's fans as much making it quieter. This is key when watching a movie and all the sudden, you can hear your projector spin up like the air conditioning just came on. The LS5000 eliminates that completely. this thing runs quiet. Laser also allows for deeper contrast and better colors. This is true for the LS5000 over non laser Epson projectors in the Home Cinema line, however, it doesn't fix the one major show stopping issue for me personally. That is black levels. Even the best, most expensive, reference grade projectors on the market really need a completely black room, with black matte painted walls, and zero reflective surfaces, other than the screen itself, to really mimick a truer black that can even hope to match that of say an OLED. Projectors simply will never get to OLED levels. However, when you give them this environment, many of the current projectors coming to market, elite or even mid range, are performing excellent in this category. Some are getting really close to that OLED "perfect" black. The LS5000 sadly, is not even close. Even trying to cheat a little by using a darker grey screen over a traditional white screen, while helps, still sits somewhere around a 60% black in real world usage. I ended up setting my laser brightness (not image brightness) to around 65% which I felt compensated a little to make the blacks darker while not crushing the detail. It was acceptable to me during my review process, but not something I would ever tolerate long term. Color accuracy was also something of a mixed bag. When watching a native 4k content using SDR, colors were fairly accurate. I was able to get an error of 10% reference grade measurements with my colorimeter, which for almost everyone other than eagle eye enthusiasts or calibrators would consider this a really good color balance. When using HDR however, saturation, which the point of HDR, was too high, causing skin tones and other highlights to be blown out. I was able to correct this by reducing saturation -5 points and I was able to get near the same 10% margin of error on RGB measurements. One of the additional features on this new LS line of projectors is the AI picture quality settings. I never use image enhancement on any of my displays, so I consider these useless and marketing grabs in all cases. With that said, turning on some of the AI image enhancing settings, like dynamic contrast (which does zero things to fix the terrible black levels) or tone mapping do assist with some of the color inaccuracies. The same fixes can be applied with proper calibration, but out of the box for an untrained person to get a good picture, skipping the dynamic contrast but enabling the AI tone mapping does offer improvements to the image. Epson also includes some fantastic screen placement adjustments below the lens. You can shift the image up, down, left or right to a significant degree to perfectly align the image output to your projector screen. Enlarging or shrinking the image, pulling back the projector or moving it closer, once focused, does no degrade the image quality in any way. It will reduce the overall lumens output the further back you go, but colors and sharpness remain perfect. The LS5000 sits at 2500 lumens. This is plenty bright enough for a dedicated, dark room, which is where any projector should go anyway. If you do feel you need a projector in a bright room, you would need to consider other, brighter options and avoid the LS5000 at all costs. This projector also uses pixel shift to produce it's 4k image. This means it uses x2 1920 x 1080 panels and "stitches" them together. This will allow devices to register this projector as "4k" however, it is not a true, native, 4k projector. The result is a good, sharp, 4k like image, but with slight blurriness. Most people will not notice, or care, however, if you compare this to a real, native 4k projector, those will appear much sharper and more defined than one using pixel shift. This is a budget constraint and technology used to balance price to performance. Bottom line. The Eposn LS5000 is an ok projector. It sits in a weird spot between some of the newer, more innovative technology coming to projectors that beat it on image quality in a significant way. It's priced at the same cost one could get an elite OLED TV from 1 or 2 years ago at large sizes. Unless you need 100+" over picture quality, Many TVs will be a better choice. If you want that 100, 120, 150, maybe even 300" image, but also care for image quality, you need to triple your budget and reality. If and image quality is a moderate concern for you, size matters, and you have budget constraints, this would be a good option to look into. This is older tech with modern laser light and some ok AI elements that some people may find useful.

Awesome 4K Projector - Still Needs a Dark Room

I’ve got the LS5000 set up in our basement with a 100” motorized screen. The biggest surprise has been how much the kids enjoy it. We’ve been using it for movie nights and they absolutely love having a screen that big. It’s a pretty cool experience without having to dedicate an entire room to a home theater. Picture quality has been great, especially with the lights down. Colors look good, there’s plenty of detail, and the laser light source gets bright enough that we don’t have to sit in complete darkness to enjoy it. I’ve also been using it for console gaming, which was something I was really curious about. I’m used to gaming on high-end monitors, so I tend to notice when a display feels sluggish. The LS5000 supports 4K at 120Hz and gaming on a 100” screen has been a lot of fun. I haven’t had any issues with noticeable lag. The one downside is brightness during the day. It’s still a projector, and even with 2,500 lumens, it’s not going to compete with a modern TV when you’ve got sunlight coming into the room. The image loses some of its punch with a lot of ambient light. If you’re planning to use this in a bright living room as your primary display, I’d probably look elsewhere. For a basement or a room where you can control the lighting, though, it’s a great option. I’m happy with the projector and the kids are getting a lot of enjoyment out of it. That’s really what I wanted out of it in the first place. As long as you keep you’re expectations realistic, you’ll love what Epson has done with this model.
