The Weeknd Truly Wants It All...

In his effort to find the Beauty Behind the Madness, The Weeknd appears to be following in the footsteps of Taylor Swift by moving past his native genre in exchange for Pop. (Perhaps because its crown has remained unclaimed after the passing of its king in 2009). It is difficult to discern if the style shift is genuine growth, true genius, or just good fortune – But luck rarely lasts this long. Perhaps Able is finally utilizing his resources & test driving the Record Label formula for success – a help he seems to have turned down when creating Kissland. The change will undoubtedly draw hoards of new fans, but many who were around from his humble & mysterious beginning are sure to be critical of his assimilation to a more mainstream sound. Admittedly, he wants it all and is following the money, but If he is selling out; it appears he has been afforded the unique opportunity to do so on his own terms - mostly maintaining lyrical control as he continues to search for something meaningful to say. Luckily for R&B, The Weeknd has not yet found happiness and his angst, loneliness, & hurt still shines through in a gritty & profound way. While some roots remain, XO fans will have to settle for a Weeknd who has become a musical actor - successfully imitating a wide range of genres instead of over dosing on the perfection that he has been forced to outgrow. The album features several proven hits such as “The Hills”, “Can’t Feel My Face”, & “Earned It”, but the remaining tracks are versatile & catchy (with a few unlikely guest appearances). “Shameless” sounds like a song written for Justin Bieber with some added expletives and XO flair - while “Angel” could have easily been an Orchestral Super Ballad written (& perhaps performed) by R. Kelly. Many of the songs (such as “Often”, “Prisoner”, & “In The Night”) leaked long ago, but they are some of his best and are still very much a worth while addition to the album as The Weekend’s greatest talent is making music worth buying even after it as been given away for free (ie the platinum selling Trilogy). Beauty Behind the Madness may be less haunting than his previous mixtape albums, but it is an energetic, ferocious, & well rounded vision that is worth multiple spins in its entirety. If nothing else, fans will simply be thrilled that The Weeknd has finally given us more than 10 new songs while still leaving plenty to dig up on the internet in the months to come. The Weeknd may still be a prisoner to his addictions, but he is certainly capable of anything….
