I bought this hoping I could do a once-over on my rug that my dog had defiled within the first week of having, then to use it as a spot cleaner going forward. Do not make this same mistake...it is LITERALLY just a spot cleaner. Unless you're prepared to sit on the floor and go through several cycles of dumping dirty water and refilling the formula, etc. (I did, though, I wasn't about to rent a machine for a 7x10 and 3x5 rug (the rest of my house is hardwood or tile)...but that's not why my review is 4 stars. I just want to warn you about that...if you've got space to store an upright carpet cleaner and/or you actually have carpet, not just a couple of rugs, in your house, I would say go with that instead. My only complaints about this unit for it's intended purpose are that the dirty water fills up far too quickly (or rather, it's capacity for dirty water is very low...half the tank still remains empty but it's actually full. Also that it uses a lot of solution to remove very little, so be sure to bargain hunt for all those Oxy solutions and Pet Removal shampoo/cleaners, etc. And finally, the brushes get dirty/clogged very easily which affects the suction. Overall, though, it's a good machine and is great for a small spot or two at a time. It's a little weighty to be getting in and out all the time, but if you need something only rarely, it's great. I'm trying to teach my dog to stop peeing on rugs, so I feel like I'm constantly getting it out and wonder why I bother putting it away. Positives...it's compact, it's easy to store, it's aesthetically pleasing (as far as little shampooers go), and it will get the spots up, even if they're a little old. The sooner you get to them, the better, obviously, but I was able to get out old spots with just a little extra elbow grease.

We originally purchased this machine just hoping to improve the appearance of some pretty nasty upholstery stains in a pre-owned RV that we had bought. To be perfectly honest, I saved all the packing materials just in case it was "a worthless piece of junk" so I could return it without being hassled. It did such a good job cleaning the specific spots on the upholstery so I wound up cleaning every remaining square inch of the upholstery in the RV. I was so impressed with those results that I used the machine in our home to follow up cleaning the bad spots that our Rug Doctor carpet cleaner wasn't able to get out. This machine is so small and lightweight that I used it to clean the entire carpet in the RV since it could reach into the hard to reach places. The small waste tank is a pain (having to constantly empty it), but at least you can see for yourself just how dirty everything is as you're working. It has performed wonderfully in a variety of cleaning projects, cleaning some very old stains. Perfectly clean, "like new"? Of course not, but VERY acceptably clean, MUCH cleaner than I expected. I don't know why everyone isn't as happy with it as I am, but I am totally satisfied with the Bissel.

I was about to rent a Rug Doctor at the hardware store next door but stopped in at B.B. and saw this. They honored in store the online price for both the cleaner and the large container of the Pet Stain and Odor Solution so away we went. The unit snaps together easily and has a handy built in handle on the top (although it’s not very heavy). My adorable but clueless rescue hound had had another bad night with his stomach and the cleaner beats dragging out a bucket of water, a scrubbrush and 75 paper towels any day. It works just like a full size rug cleaner: hot solution going out, release, and use the suction on the backstroke, but you are down on your knees so get a stack of towels. It did a great job cleaning, and the pet solution has a nice scent for those of us with fussy noses. The only reason the rating isn’t a 5 is that the suction fails quickly if there is any pet hair or even rug fuzz on the carpet. The instructions say to vacuum thoroughly before using but with pets, that’s not always practicable. You can clean hair out of the dirty tank and I back-flushed the clogged hose in the bathtub (unplugged, cord outside the tub!) but seems like a simple design flaw not to have a small filter/trap at the base of the hose owners can take out and rinse. Otherwise highly recommended.

There are several different versions of this Bissell cleaner that are marketed to different tasks - I'm not convinced there are any substantial differences among them. I bought this to take care of household accidents from a new puppy. I have a full-sized carpet cleaner but needed something smaller for spot cleaning. I'm very impressed by the flow of the cleaning fluid - and the extraction is strong enough to leave carpets and upholstery barely damp. The unit has two canisters - one for a cleaning fluid and water mix - one for the dirty extraction. The cleaning canister is easy to fill and the extraction canister is easy to empty and clean. The cord is sufficiently long and the hose is long enough to provide adequate freedom of movement. This device is perfect for the limited tasks it is designed for: spot cleaning and upholstery cleaning and freshening. Not worth buying if you don't have a specific need for it - it's not a general purpose cleaner. For what I needed, it worked perfectly and I'm very pleased with the unit.

I just got the machine today and went through three tanks of water practicing on my daughter's house. She inherited wine/dirt stains from when her Grandma lived there, and now she lives there with two large dogs. Eventually the carpet will be pulled but in the meantime...we got the Bissell. The good - I sucked up LOTS of dirt and dog hair. The tanks and hose were easy to clean out The not so good - I was wishing for a larger water tank and longer hose. This is definitely a "Spot" cleaner. I moved from one spot to another and got kind of tired of lugging the machine, but I was able to suck up much of the water so carpet was not soaked. I left the ceiling fans on and will check tomorrow. I mainly got this to clean upholstery and I believe it will work well for that, based on how the carpet spots cleaned up.

Just want to say this first, the "Pro-heat" thing you see on the label is just a marketing gimmick. This does not heat the water, the instructions simply tell you to add hot(not boiling) water to the reservoir. But, with that said, it still does a great job of cleaning the carpets. I used it to clean every bit of upholstery and carpeting in my truck. Even the headliner without having to take the headliner out. It was a little awkward for me to contort in a way to effectively clean the headliner but the mobility of this unit definitely helps make it possible! The two brush types are nice, but only for the size difference, they both seem to clean the same. All in all I"d buy it again. Only gripe I have is the clean/dirty water reservoirs could be a little bigger. but maybe I'm just trying to clean a larger area than this is intended for. It's mostly for spot cleaning, not whole house/vehicle cleaning...but it works if you're patient and have a lot of free time!

      Underwhelming, physically demanding

This unit is very disappointing. It's a wet vac with a brush on the end, there's nothing else to it. Read the description carefully, it "utilizes" hot water, meaning you can add hot water to the tank and the unit itself actually doesn't heat at all. You get on your hands and knees, spray solution through the brush nozzle and work it into the fibers yourself. Once worked in, you push the nozzle down into the carpet and it draws moisture out. Not thoroughly, might I add, as it takes many passes and a lot of downward pressure to vacuum most of the solution back up. For me the kicker is that often you have to do the whole process multiple times because working the solution in by hand with the supplied brush is not effective. I'm cleaning up cat stains, and typically when I find an area he's been using it's hard to locate the exact spot (or spots). Since you have to get down on your hands and knees you run the risk of kneeling in an invisible stain, and even if your knees avoid the mess your hands will surely be covered in solution and "dirt" by the time your done. This product makes the process only slightly easier than spraying solution in by hand and towel drying it up. I should have gone with my gut and bought an upright motorized brush unit.

I had great expectations for this product. It was difficult to use, made quite a mess over the total floor area and left shadowed spots on the remaining fabric. I was trying to clean my upholstered dining room chairs. I put plastic down underneath the chair before I began. The effect of the spray nozzle was not directed in one, single direction. This occurred whether I used the large or small head. There was not damage done to the wooden legs of the chairs. Although the specific "dirt spots" were removed, it left a ring around them and that ring was not possible to remove once dried. Fortunately, I only completed two of the 10 chairs. I will now have them recovered and throw out the machine. I should have rented first to see if it would work rather than purchase. I did use the recommended cleaning solution.
