      Great. But...

So I have tried a fair variety 70-200 lenses so far, such as the Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC DI USD, Canon 70-200 f4 USM, Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS USM. Now I tried this one and so far image quality is great, razor sharp images, very quick auto focus(unless your indoors, in the dark), light weight, feels very nice in the hands and very smooth zoom ring. The bokeh is pretty decent too, doesn't melt the backround too much, but its still pretty good. All of it seems very much worth the price, but the only thing that makes me give it a 4 out of 5, is the IS motor noise, very annoying...It grinds a lot and its pretty loud, you also have to turn off the IS to get rid of the noise. On that note, this lens is not ideal for video if your using on camera microphones, it should be ok if your using something wireless near your subject. You would think this could be an easy fix for canon, but despite that the lens is good overall, did some test shots indoors with some cheap lighting equipment on my cat, turned out really good. Bottom line, if you can ignore the noise and are not doing a whole lot of photography that requires a lot less noise(like a quiet wedding reception in a church), then this is a good lens. For me though, I'll dish out the extra hundreds of dollars for the Canon F2.8, despite the weight, or the Tamron version.

The canon 70-200F4L IS lens is one of the best lenses canon makes. It is very sharp-from corner to corner, it is very fast and quiet focusing, the focusing is internal so the barrel does not extend out OR rotate when zooming, which makes life easier when using filters. It is weather sealed (non-IS versions are not) so if you are shooting lightning, or storm chasing tornados, you don't have to worry about it getting wet. The image stabilization is fantastic, I previously owned the non-IS version and upgraded to this one and I could not be happier. You get 3-4 f-stops lower than you would otherwise get, which means you can handhold in low light. I hardly use my tripod anymore. This lens is ideal for just about anything, from portraits, to sports, to weddings, to zoo wildlife, to photojournalism. I highly recommend this lens. It is a bit pricey but it is worth it. I have cheap lenses too and you do get what you pay for.

      Incredibly versatile & sharp lens

I adore this lens. I use it all the time and find it to be one of my most sharp and versatile lenses. I looked at both the f4 and f2.8 IS variants of this L lens and decided on the f4 because of weight and cost. With today's quality DSLRs, I found pushing the ISO a bit more than covered me for my needs, and the reduced weight made me very happy. The build quality is excellent and I expect to own this lens fora very long time. The shots are sharp, exhibit excellent color and contrast, and autofocus is fast and precise. The only knock I had, and can't really call it a knock, is that the IS is audible. More so than my other Canon Ls anyway, but not enough for me to not recommend this lens to anyone looking for a fantastic lens that will make them happy with every shot.

This lens deserves the 5 star rating the reviews give it. I loved it the minute I took it out of the box. It is only off my camera when I am using my 24-105mm. It is lightweight, compact, well made and well worth the money. I have a 1.4x teleconverter on order and can't wait to try the two of them together. Depending on your needs but if you can only have one L type lens this is one I would take some time in looking at and consider. I do not think you will be disappointed.

I kept hearing great things about the 70x200 L lens. I bought this one for around $1100. What I learned later is I bought the 4.0 version, not the 2.8 version that goes for about $2300. The later one is the one with excellent the raving reviews. I have two Canon L lens that give me good image quality when used correctly. I got this new third lens and used it for over two weeks in all kinds of conditions and settings. The image quality was terrible, worse than my inexpensive 18x135 kit lens, which I refuse to use due to image quality. Apparently I got a poor copy with focusing issues. This happens with lenses, even L lenses, from time to time. Best Buy was gracious about refunding my money and I will buy a different L lens.

My first L lens. It is an Indulgence. Thank you wife. It is so good, one can get spoiled. One can see why a pro would need tools like this. They need fast, sharp and dependable equipment - that's what this offers. Does an amateur need this - I'll let you decide. I am not a pro and have no intention of becoming one. This is an indulgence but it makes taking pictures even more of a pleasure. Three letters can be used to describe this lens -- W.O.W. !!!! hope this is helpful

Great lens. Takes sharp crisp images. Silent and very fast AF. But if you take lots of indoor shots or where light is limited and a flash is not an option, then I recommend the f2.8 version.

The Canon EF70-200mm f4L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens is a great and versatile lens for landscape and wildlife photography. It is very very sharp with dynamic color. It is not too heavy and is very portable. The focus is just excellent.
