Synopsis

Deep Impact
Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker) directed this science-fiction disaster drama about the possible extinction of human life after a comet is discovered headed toward Earth with the collision only one year away. Ambitious MSNBC reporter Jenny Lerner (Tea Leoni) stumbles onto the story, prompting a White House press conference. United States President Beck (Morgan Freeman) announces the government's solution: a team of astronauts will travel to the comet and destroy it. The team leader aboard the spaceship Messiah is Spurgeon Tanner (Robert Duvall), who was once the last man to walk on the moon. However, the mission fails, splitting off a chunk of the comet, now due to land in the Atlantic with the impact sending a 350-foot tidal wave flooding 650 miles inland, destroying New York and other cities. The larger part of the comet, hitting in Canada, will trigger an E.L.E. (Extinction Level Event), not unlike a "nuclear winter" as dust clouds block out the sun and bring life to an end. President Beck reveals Plan B: a cavernous underground retreat constructed to hold one million Americans, with most to be selected through a national lottery. Since teenage amateur astronomer Leo Biederman (Elijah Wood) discovered the comet, his family gets a pass to enter the cave, but his girlfriend Sarah (Leelee Sobieski) and her parents will be left behind. Meanwhile, still in space, Spurgeon Tanner devises a plan for a kamikaze-styled operation that could possibly save the Earth. Special visual effects by Scott Farrar and Industrial Light & Magic. ~ Bhob Stewart, Rovi

    Really good sci-fi movie

This is a really good, over looking sci-fi film. It had the misfortune of being released at the same time as the big budget, heavy marketed, megamovie, Armageddon. Many people pasted on Deep Impact for Armageddon. It don't have the action and drama as Armageddon, but they try to take a more human and realistic (well, as realistic as Hollywood can get and still make money) approach to the same situation. I recommend this movie for those that don't need to see super human Bruce Willis save the day.

Paired with "Armageddon" in the summer these similar themed films each carried their own weight. Some very fine special effects took only a small moment of this film. There was more story surrounding the breaking of the news of the impending impact. Morgan Freeman very real and presidential in his role. The dramatic acting is what sets this film apart from Armageddon. You will watch this more than one time.

I remember this film coming out to a lot of fanfare when I was a kid. Now I'm an adult when I talk about Deep Impact I'm surprised by how few people remember it. I introcuced my wife to this film a couple of years ago and she loves it. Yes, it carries all the cheesy diasater movie tropes you'd expect but it defines an era of cinema perfectly.

Made in 1998, I was surprised I had never seen this movie before. While shopping at Best Buy, I noticed it in the $5.99 bin and bought it . So Glad I did. Great cast, good story line. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the believable movie. What if...... Several good "need a kleenex" moments. I will watch this one again!

I remember seeing this in theaters when I was a kid and leaving speechless and almost crying. To this date Deep Impact has transform to an instant classic. Now that it's on HD 1080p the special effects look even more realistic, and the film leaves you thinking. What if...

If you like end of the world stories you will love this movie. Buy it and put it next to Contagion, Armageddon, and Interstellar. In this movie you get to know people as families so prepare for that whole aspect of it. Family friendly for families with teenage children.

I like this movie because Morgan Freeman is the first black president in movie history, which is funny the current President-hopeful Obama running for office. Even funnier is that crazy weather we are having lately, kinda like a comet is coming to Earth, well funny and weird, I guess
