Erin Brockovich [DVD] [2000]

  • SKU: 3970073

Universal's exquisitely-presented DVD of Steven Soderbergh's box-office and critical hit Erin Brockovich is sure to delight fans of the film, while drawing new ones in equal measure. The picture and audio transfers are fairly run of the mill, presenting the film in its original 1.85:1 aspect ratio with Dolby Digital 5.1 Sound. The real meat and potatoes of this DVD, however, are the extras. Universal includes its usual "Spotlight on Location" documentary, which highlights the making of the film and includes interviews with the cast and crew. There is also a three-minute segment on the real Erin Brockovich, which details her experiences battling the lawyers of Pacific Gas and Electric. A true standout is the 30-minute reel of deleted scenes. Available with or without commentary from Soderbergh, these scenes add a great deal of texture to the movie, and leave the viewer wondering why they were cut at all. Erin Brockovich was one of the most acclaimed films of 2000, and this DVD does it justice.

    Synopsis

    Erin Brockovich
Julia Roberts stars in this legal drama based on the true story of a woman who helped win the largest settlement ever paid in a direct-action lawsuit. Erin Brockovich (Roberts) is a single mother of three who, after losing a personal injury lawsuit, asks her lawyer, Ed Masry (Albert Finney), if he can help her find a job. Ed gives her work as a file clerk in his office, and she runs across some information on a little-known case filed against Pacific Gas and Electric. Erin begins digging into the particulars of the case, convinced that the facts simply don't add up, and persuades Ed to allow her to do further research; in time, she discovers a systematic cover-up of the industrial poisoning of a city's water supply, which threatens the health of the entire community. Erin Brockovich was directed by Steven Soderbergh; Julia Roberts earned a $20 million payday for her work on the film, the highest salary paid to a female film star up to that time. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

"All That is Gold Does Not Glitter" - Tolkien

This is the true tale of a courageous American who stood by her convictions and helped a community win a tremendous lawsuit. Today's newspapers, and hopefully tomorrow's history books, rightfully hail Erin Brokovich as a hero, but this movie reminds us that Brokovich was once just an ordinary citizen - and a clumsy one at that! The movie begins with Erin (Julia Roberts) as a complete loser, going from job interview to job interview, and landing only bad luck. In the course of her to-ing and fro-ing, she becomes injured as her hideous car is hit by the Jaguar of an emergency room doctor! She winds up landing the only job she can - as a humble back office file clerk of Ed Masry (Albert Finney) the attorney who represents her in her injury case! The one thing that Erin does not do at the beginning of the story is glitter, but we soon see her true nature - among the finest and most golden! In the course of her modest duties, she makes the shocking discovery that a well has been poisoned and hundreds of people and animals have become gravely ill, including a little girl whose swimming dreams are dashed! Erin goes the extra million miles by actually visiting the California desert community and, taking Ed with her, speaking directly to the people. Here in Southern California, where Erin lives and helps people, temperatures can soar to over 100 degrees, and water is our most precious commodity. Director Steven Soderburg shows the anguish of those whose lives were affected by this horrible disaster that Erin helped to remedy, and, through watching the movie, we not only appreciate and admire Erin's and Ed's bravery, but we also realize the value and importance of our most basic need - water! This sobering movie is a must-see!

Good film, but an Oscar for Julia?

Full disclosure: I have never been a big Julia Roberts fan. I think she's a decent actress, but she's really more of a "movie star" than an actress. She's pretty much the same in every film. When she tries to get out of her comfort zone (see "Mary Reilly") it's a complete disaster. Having said all that, Roberts is very good in this Steven Soderbergh film. She uses her best assets (in every sense of that word) in a performance that earned her an Oscar. However, did she deserve it? Also nominated that year was Ellen Burstyn for "Requiem for a Dream." We could argue whether she should have been in the Supporting Actress category instead of Lead, but she was spectacular and there's just no contest. Just my opinion, of course. "Erin Brockovich" is a good film and I recommend it. I just wonder what it could have been with another more skilled actress.

My husband and I both thought this movie was just great. No one else could have play the part of Erin, better than Julia. The story line (based on true events) is absolutly wonderful. What this woman did for these people is just outstanding, and we need more people like her. The mix of drama and comedy makes this a great movie for anyone looking for entertainment!

Of corse this is based off of a true story of a huge case between PG&E and a small California town. It's an oldie but a goodie. Bought it from bestbuy for the digital copy only. You may say "why not just buy it from iTunes?" Well iTunes was 15.00 BB was 8.00

I bought this movie after seeing a commercial with Erin Brockobich. I had heard of the movie before and was curious about it. After watching it, I'd definitely recommend it, especially if you like strong female leads. Great feminist film.

Great job, Julia! This film is great because of Julia Roberts' performance and it's a great emotional film that has a strong female lead. This was an interesting and gripping film and whenever it's on TV I always watch it. This isn't a movie to miss.

It's Julia Roberts! What is not to love? Seriously, the movie is awesome. The "Ultra-Violet Digital Copy" that you have to use iTunes for is a real joke. They should disclose that in the product discription.
