Q: QuestionCan the self propelled featured be turned OFF & used as a conventional push mower?(5 answers)
A: AnswerHello cliff - Yes, the lawn mower can be operate without the self-propelled feature. Simply, do not engage the lever associated with the propelling feature and the unit will not propel forward. The run time will last longer without the self-propelled option being engaged.Answered by Greenworks Tools

Mower cuts great, but battery life is a concern
Summary - Mower cutting/mulching performance and features are 5 stars. - Battery performance is only 3 stars (would be less with a yard greater than 0.28 acres based on my experience so far). I'd be interested to know under what conditions the battery could mow up to 1/2 acre as advertised. - Purchasing the mower online from Best Buy is 5 stars. Details Purchased in April 2024. I have a 12,000 sq ft property (0.28 acres – 80’ by 150’) with a house and 2-car garage/driveway so the actual mowing area is less than 12,000 sq ft. My lawn slopes slightly in the back. In the review below, Battery 1 is the 4 Ah battery that came with the mower. Battery 2 is a second 4 Ah battery that I purchased as a precaution so that I would not have to worry about recharging a battery to completely mow my lawn. I use self-propel quite a bit and set it just past halfway. My lawn is thick and grows rapidly in the spring, which is why I went with an 80 V mower. First mowing (April 6) - I charged Battery 1 and it went from 2 bars (factory charge) to fully charged in 35 minutes. I only had to mow the backyard which took 25 minutes and two bars remained on the battery when finished. It took 30 minutes to completely recharge the battery. Second mowing (April 14) - I charged Battery 2 and it went from 2 bars (factory charge) to fully charged in 35 minutes. The entire yard took 55 minutes and the battery died while self-propelling back to the garage. I was pleased that I only needed one battery. I did not measure how long it took to recharge the battery. Third mowing (April 21) - Battery 1 died after 30 minutes (barely finished the front yard and small side yards, although I had to make a few short second passes to chop up rows of clippings that were left behind). I used Battery 2 to mow the backyard and raised the deck from position 6 to position 7 to minimize the load and it had 1 bar remaining when finished. I was concerned that Battery 2 would die before finishing, but the mower made it back to the garage using self-propel. Fourth mowing (April 27) - I set the deck height to 6 for the entire yard. Battery 1 finished the front and small side yards and part of the backyard before I shut it off to switch batteries because it was down to 1 bar. I finished the backyard with Battery 2 and no bars remained when it got back to the garage. No second passes were needed. Battery 1 took 40 minutes to recharge and Battery 2 took 44 minutes to recharge. The grass was dry each time I mowed, although the blades of grass are moisture-filled based on the damp clippings under the deck. Mulching performance is excellent, and even with tall grass only occasional clippings are left in a row (I believe on the right side of the mower but will check next time). The mower does not bog down, which is impressive given the growth rate/density of the lawn this time of year! I have not used the Turbo button and just let the mower auto-sense when it needs to increase the blade speed. The fold-up storage makes cleaning the deck’s underside very easy. My last mower had a cast aluminum deck so I am doing everything I can to take care of the steel deck on this mower and prevent grass build-up. After each mowing, I wipe the underside of the deck with a damp sponge followed by using Meguiar’s Ultimate Waterless Wash and Wax to keep the underside like new (please don’t judge). The box says that the mower cuts up to 1/2 acre using one battery with a run-time of 45 minutes and a recharge time of 60 minutes. I suppose during a hot summer when the grass gets dry, it may be possible to cut up to 1/2 acre on one charge but cutting 1/2 acre in 45 minutes seems overly optimistic. I thought that having two 4 Ah batteries would give me sufficient margin for my 0.28 acre property, but the last two mowings are giving me “range anxiety”. I even disengage the self-propel at times to minimize battery use. The manual also does not state at what charge level the battery should be stored, but according to a Q&A answer from Greenworks, batteries should be stored fully charged so that is what I am doing. However, I may try charging the batteries the day that I intend to mow the lawn to see if they last longer. Any tips to maximize battery performance and get the most years of use from the batteries are appreciated. Charging the batteries emits a strong, unpleasant odor (likely from the charger) so I may try charging outdoors. I wish the charger’s fan would shut off after the battery is fully charged (green light stays solid) and I wish the charger had a button to disengage the battery. Inserting the battery into the mower’s battery compartment requires a good shove to hear the click and the battery release button to disengage the battery is a little awkward to use. Battery insertion/removal should be improved, especially since the hatch lid must be held in the open position using your other hand. I’m very satisfied with the mower’s mulching/cutting performance and light weight. I have not used the grass bag or side discharge. However, after the second mowing I am disappointed with the battery performance. Spring is the most challenging time of year to mow my lawn, but I really don’t want to: a) mow more than once per week b) charge a battery that is still warm from use (my understanding is that charging a warm battery is not good for it), or c) purchase a third battery to avoid charging a warm battery. I do not fertilize my lawn in the spring to keep mowing manageable until the weather warms up and the growth slows down. Hopefully, when the grass grows more slowly, I'll be able to mow my entire 0.28 acre yard with plenty of battery life to spare. Time will tell...

Powerful
This mower is powerful. The self propelled is amazing. You just guide it, mower does all the work. The battery keeps a charge. I haven't had it die out on me yet. Im so happy with this mower. It also folds up. Doesn't take up much space.

My neighbors want it now
I was the last guy in the block that went from hiring someone to saying “ugh, I’m a do it myself” and honestly I’m super happy with my choice of machine. This is not my first one of these, or even from this brand. However, it is my first time using a SELF PROPELLED one and it is a game changer. While everyone in the block is hurting their backs pushing their mowers, here I am chilling, letting the machine do all the work by itself. Here are a few things I love about it: - you are able to control how fast the machine self propels. - Easy controllers - Powerfull. Cuts through everything like nothing, specially in Turbo mode. - Turbo mode - the charger has a fan to keep the battery cool.
