Outstanding Laptop That is Serviceable!
Posted .Thinkpad's are the best made and offer premium performance no other laptop comes close to. Before I bought this laptop, I bought a Dell XPS which only lasted 3 years and went through 2 service issues with Dell before the motherboard died. Then I bought an Acer Spin 5 which I used for about a year. The Acer Spin 5 is an outstanding mid-level laptop but it had trouble driving 3 monitors without the USB C port. I was also missing owning a well built solid laptop. I finally broke down and bought the Thinkpad L380 Yoga and LOVE IT! Before buying it, I wanted to make sure I could upgrade the memory and SSD and that the memory was not soldered to the board. I chatted with a tech on Lenovo's site and also confirmed this with the Lenovo rep in Best Buy. I was not going to buy it if I could not upgrade the memory. This model is unique in the fact it has 2 memory slots and can take up to 32GB of memory. You can also remove the WIFI card and SSD to upgrade both. The entire unit is completely upgradeable and serviceable. I also have a Costco membership and could have bought the Lenovo Yoga X (top of the line model) but that unit's memory is soldered to the board. Also, it uses the newer type of SSD drive which is much more expensive. The build quality and performance of this machine is OUTSTANDING! It's super fast and the screen and keyboard is amazing. I especially love the touch point for mouse control. Once you get used to a touch point, you will always hate using a track pad - trust me on this. Also, this model has a world facing camera where you can take pictures from the front in tablet mode. It's a very unique model in the fact it's fully serviceable/upgradeable and has the world facing camera. I also love the fact the Lenovo software automatically downloads firmware, drivers and all available updates without having to go hunt them down yourself. The one thing I hate about the Acer Spin 5 I own is the fact they have no software to upgrade drivers and firmware. You have to go look for and load the firmware yourself from their website. Also, their drivers rarely ever get updated so I used a free driver update product called Driver Booster to keep it up to date. Seriously, don't waist your time and money buying a "high end" Dell XPS or consumer grade shiny metal HP Envy other high end consumer grade machine when you can get this laptop for $1000. There is no way you can go wrong with this unit. The hardware is so well integrated that you can put this laptop up against a Dell with an I7 and this laptop will smoke it with it's I5 because the drivers are so well written and the hardware is so well integrated and tested. The specs don't matter if the hardware isn't properly designed to work together. In my opinion, it's better to get a well designed machine like a Think pad which may not have the I7 processor because it's going to perform much better and be much more stable under high stress performance situations. It's also just great to use - the keyboard is so well built along with the touch point/track pad and solid materials used to built it. The thing I also don't like about my Acer Spin 5 is the cheapness of the materials. It really does make a big difference. Honestly, you can't go wrong with this laptop and once you own a Thinkpad, you can't go back. Just compare the Thinkpad Yoga to the regular Yoga quality next time you are in Best Buy and you will see what I am talking about.

Posted .Thank you for choosing the Lenovo ThinkPad L380 laptop. Please keep in mind, this model is not user upgradable. A certified technician must do all of the work, so as to not void the warranty. You are correct, this system has two RAM memory slots and can support up to 32GB of DDR4-2400Mhz RAM, but the work must be done by a certified technician, so as to not void the manufacturer's warranty.

Not perfect, but still really good
||Posted .This laptop is fantastic! Working with ThinkPads a lot I wanted something that was user-upgradeable and was higher quality than the typical Yoga laptops. This one was perfect for my needs. Pros: -The keyboard is one of the best I've ever used on any laptop. -Built like a tank, I can tell it's going to last a while. -User-upgradable (will void your warranty), i swapped the drive for a 1TB and added 8GB of RAM and it took me 5 mins. -The screen flexibility is great for multiple purposes. -It comes with a Wacom stylus! -Price-wise, you get way more for your money than the other Yoga laptops. -It charges from 0% to ~90% in an hour, it's very fast. -More than enough ports for most people. -Battery lasts a long time. Cons: -The screen is pretty small, but there is a huge bezel around it. I'm pretty sure they could have made this 14" or 15" without affecting the size. -Screen also isn't great quality, colors are pretty muted. -There doesn't seem to be a way to make the keyboard backlight turn on and off with the ambient light, even though the screen brightness can change with ambient light. The only way to turn on the backlight is to press Fn+Spacebar. Speakers are plenty loud, but they're on the bottom of the laptop. If you have the laptop on anything besides a hard surface it muffles them. On a hard surface they're pretty good. Despite these cons, I still think this laptop is deserving of 5 stars and is worth every penny.

Posted .Thank you for choosing the lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga. This model ships with a IPS LCD w/LED Backlight, 1920 x 1080 (FHD) resolution screen, with a brightness level of 300 nits. There is a backlit keyboard on this device, controlled by the user. The speakers on this device are on the bottom front edge to position the speakers in the best location no matter where you position the 360-degree hinged screen - Laptop or tablet mode or any position in between.

I got this for the keyboard!
||Posted .I was looking to replace a 17" Lenovo Ideapad which not only turned out to be too bulky, but had a very flat keyboard that wasn't comfortable to type on. I decided I was prepared to spring for a 2-in-1 that was a bit smaller (15" or so) and had an SSD drive for performance. I tried every 2-in-1 at Best Buy, and fell in love with the ThinkPad because of its keyboard. I'm a developer, so having something comfortable to type on was very important to me, and one of the primary reasons I was trading in the previous laptop. After having it for a couple of months, I've really enjoyed the portability and performance. I haven't used the 2-in-1 feature much, but it was very handy to have when I needed to quickly show something to someone at a conference. My only very minor wish was that it had a regular RJ-45 ethernet port for the occasional time I've had an opportunity to use a wired network connection, but that is very minor. Highly recommended!

I'm glad I chose this laptop over others!
Posted .I’ve had numerous laptops over the past 20 years. My last laptop was a Sony Vaio Windows 7 laptop that was several years old. Although that laptop still works, it is so incredibly slow for doing Photoshop image editing, that it was essentially un-usable. I stayed with that old laptop partly because I prefer Windows 7 versus the new 10 version nowadays. Boot-up time for starting Windows on that old Sony laptop was a painful 3 to 5 minutes long, I literally could make a pot of coffee faster! When I finally decided to make the move to buy a new laptop, I was a bit surprised at how low laptop prices are nowadays, thanks in part to the whole iPad craze and people preferring tablets instead, I’m guessing. I quickly became enthralled with the “2 in 1 hybrid” style laptops. I prefer laptops with a “real” keyboard, partly because I can type over 60 words per minute, so the Thinkpad keyboard tops the list. I also really like the touchscreen design, mainly because I can enlarge the screen for extensive text reading. I really like, no I really “NEED” the touch-screen enlargement feature after I turned 50 and need reading glasses, such a pain. Plus I like the built-in stylus pen for writing/drawing on the screen, which reminds me of my Samsung Note smartphones with the same feature. From what I can, Best Buy only sells this particular Thinkpad L380 model, no other Thinkpad laptops. I’ve had this Thinkpad L380 laptop for a month now, and I can report that I really like it. I have not experienced any problem with this laptop, although I do have some minor complaints. For example, the lid is really very tight when in its fully closed position. I literally need to use both hands to open the lid while gripping both left and right corners. Also, the power cord (USB-C end) going into the laptop is equally very tight, it takes a bit of effort to remove the cord from the laptop port. As for the screen, I find it a little too reflective from other light sources, even though the specs say the screen has anti-reflective finish. As other reviewers have pointed out, the screen bezel is a bit large-ish, meaning it has a bit too much black dead space. Okay, now for the good points. When I press the power button to turn on the unit, this laptop boots up extremely fast!! Without timing it, I’d say it’s somewhere around 15 to 20 seconds to fully boot up. Wow! Plus shutting down seems to be even faster! I will NEVER ever go back to a spinning hard disk drive again!! From now on, it’s an SSD drive for me or nothing at all! This one thing alone makes me so happy I could cry, haha! I reaaaaaaally like the fact this L380 model has many various ports on both the left and right sides of the laptop. USB-C is the latest minimum standard nowadays it seems, even my Samsung S9 smartphone uses USB-C. I also appreciate the other ports such as HDMI, USB 3, and yes, a micro-SD card slot! I would prefer a full size SD card slot, but I’m happy it has at least a micro-SD slot. I added a Sandisk 256GB micro-SD card into the side port which I use for doing Windows backups (to an external drive). I bought the 256GB card on sale from Best Buy for around $40…so cheap compared to years ago! I also copied all my valued files onto the 256GB card (such as my pictures, songs, videos, PDFs, etc). At present time, doing a full backup takes up approx 17 to 20 GB of space, so I’m glad I got a large 256GB micro-SD card. Maybe next time I’ll get the 512GB micro-SD card if it’s on sale. The touchscreen of this laptop is very responsive, I find the quality to be quite good even though it’s not a 4k screen. The touchpad is also very responsive, makes mouse navigation a breeze. I even bought the optional Bluetooth wireless Lenovo Yoga mouse to use with this laptop. When playing the iTunes app, I can use the Lenovo mouse to wirelessly pause, or play the next song, or previous track. I can’t figure out yet how to wirelessly advance to the next slide using a Powerpoint presentation, but that’s my next challenge. I got this Lenovo Yoga mouse for around $70 at Best Buy, the silver model. While I still don’t like Windows 10 with its “Tiles” which I detest, I instead use a cool free 3rd party app called “Classic Shell” which restores the same functionality as Windows 7 including the familiar “Start” button. Using “Classic Shell” means I know how to use “Windows” again, haha! Although I haven’t upgraded yet, I may at some point have a certified technician upgrade the laptop to at least 16 or even 32 GB of RAM. I also want a larger SSD drive, such as 512GB, or even 1TB if possible. I’m sure that I will run out of the built-in 256GB of storage in the future, especially if I start doing lots of Photoshop editing. But for now, the built-in 8GB of RAM is more than snappy enough for my needs, including simple Photoshop image editing. I already mentioned that I installed a 256GB micro-SD card into the side port of the laptop, so this also expands my storage. At some point, I want to pick up a 2TB Sandisk SSD external drive, but it’s still too pricey at around $275. If I’m willing to sacrifice speed, I could choose a 4 or 5 TB external hard drive with a Hard Disk Drive (instead of SSD), which is selling for cheap comparatively speaking. This L380 laptop seems quite rugged to me, there is definitely some weight to this. I get the feeling this unit will stand up to years of usage. Although this L380 laptop is not as thin and lightweight as other “Yoga” Lenovo non-Thinkpad laptops, I have a feeling of confidence that I will get my money’s worth. I have also played around with the built-in stylus pen. It’s fun doing drawings on the screen while using the laptop in tablet mode. Although I admit it’s not something I do very often, it’s still cool and enjoyable to be able to write/draw on the screen. I really appreciate that the stylus pen is “garaged” inside the laptop. While the stylus pen is garaged, it is also recharging at the same time, hence no “AAAA” or button batteries are needed for the pen. The fact that the stylus pen stays inside the laptop while not in use means I won’t lose the pen either. I prefer this over the alternate method of using a “usb holder” for the stylus pen, which some other laptops use. The only downside is that the built-in stylus pen is smaller in size, but I can always buy an optional 3rd party stylus if I want a full size pen in the future. My GF with her MacBook is jealous of my touch-screen and stylus pen, since Apple doesn’t make a touchscreen for their laptops. Whenever I check out new laptops at stores, I secretly have an envy about so called “gaming” laptops, probably because of their high end specs and screen resolution. But then again, these over-priced gaming laptops don’t have touch-screen nor stylus pen writing! My only wish for this L380 laptop is that it has the new Thunderbolt 3.0 port, which is reputed to be the future…or at least until the next best thing is out. But alas, it only has USB-C, not Thunderbolt. But seriously though, I don’t think I will be hooking up my laptop to simultaneously display two 4k monitors any time soon. So I don’t even have the current need for Thunderbolt 3 technology. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask me about this L380 Thinkpad.

Comes with an Excellent keyboard
||Posted .While the fingerprint reader is hard to configure if you use Ubuntu, this machine is really good for developers. Before buying the L380 I bought another laptop with weird webcam placement that came with a disastrous killer wifi card, as I was told it was a "developer edition". The L380 might not be top specs but in my case, as a developer, it is really portable and the keyboard is COOL, but really *COOL*. The look of this laptop is quite standard and does not come with ugly logos and neon lights, making this a really good option if you want to look professional. When I have to run large queries I do that on a desktop machine. My experience using the L380 with Ubuntu was really cool, everything worked out of the box except for the fingerprint reader. The machine came with Windows 10 Pro, and I have to say that on both systems the wifi works really well, unlike other brand who likes to blame the user for their stupid hardware savings. And again, the keyboard is really comfortable.

Very nice, but not for me
||Posted .Great 2-in-1 for a student/writer. It wasn't the right fit for me, but it has to with personal preferences & needs. I didn't care for the little pen. While it's convenient having it store in the device, it would get stuck inside. I struggled a lot putting it back. The screen would not get bright enough. While the keyboard was very comfortable to type on, the Function & Control keys are in opposite spots. I have 8-10 hour work days on computers with the keys in the right place. Then, I would come home to the Thinkpad with the keys in the wrong place. It slowed down my typing more than you think it would. I think it's a very nice, no frills laptop, but I need a more traditional keyboard & dedicated graphics for video editing, so I returned it. I'm now saving up for the HP Spectre x360 15T or Microsoft Surface Book 2, which is at a completely different price bracket.
