Escape the everyday with spatial surround-sound From easy Bluetooth wireless streaming to the heart-pounding thrills of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X soundtracks, the TX-SR494 deepens enjoyment of daily life with great sound and smart features. Seven channels of high-current power give you freedom to choose a speaker layout that suits. Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer* or DTS Virtual:X place sound overhead or behind if you don’t want height or surround speakers and both Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X are on board. Rear surrounds, bi-amped front speakers, or Powered Zone B audio are also an option. AccuEQ with subwoofer EQ and AccuReflex for 5.2.2-ch Dolby Atmos-enabled systems clarify sound in any space. As the heart of your home theater, the TX-SR494 has HDMI terminals supporting HDR and 4K/60p video, while the GUI with OSD over HDMI, Zone B pre-/line-out, and Vocal Enhancer function make this receiver a joy to use as well as hear.
Ready for 4K HDR entertainment
Enjoy support for HDR video including HDR10, HLG, Dolby Vision, and BT.2020. The 4:4:4 color space is also supported. Six HDMI inputs, ARC-ready MAIN OUT, and SUB OUT pass 4K/60p and HDR video.
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X Sound
The two sound technologies allow engineers to map sound anywhere in 3D space. Dolby Surround and DTS Neural:X find overhead cues in legacy soundtracks and upmix for awesome spatial realism.
Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer
When playing any Dolby format, engaging Dolby Atmos Height Virtualizer enables a more immersive listening experience, creating a virtual surround and height effect from traditional speaker layouts without employing additional surround or height speakers.
Easy Bluetooth Volume Control
Outfitted with the latest Bluetooth technology, this receiver gives you the freedom to choose how loud you experience your music, movies, and games.
Discrete Amps
The receiver's discrete amps, high-output transformer, and large capacitors are designed to deliver high current to the speakers to help provide better speaker control for fast transient response, wide dynamic range, and clear, accurate sound.
AccuEQ Room Acoustic Calibration with AccuReflex
Sets sound-pressure levels and selects the right subwoofer crossover setting and applies equalization to all your speakers. AccuReflex is designed to optimize object-based audio reproduction through Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.
Clear Dialogue with the Touch of a Button
DSP-controlled Vocal Enhancer that identifies vocal frequencies and allows you to raise or lower them to your taste using the keys on the remote or via the tone controls on the receiver's front panel.
Powered Zone B Audio or Front-Channel Bi-Amping
The Height/Surround Back outputs can alternatively be used as a Bi-Amp/Zone B speaker output to drive stereo speakers in another room with a 5.2-channel setup in the main room. You can also bi-amp your compatible front speaker pair.
Advanced Music Optimizer
Advanced Music Optimizer technology helps restore lost information for enhanced sound quality with these file types. This mode also optimizes Bluetooth streaming playback quality.

A: AnswerYes. Upscales 1080P input signals to 4K output.Answered by EastTexasTrav
- A: AnswerHello Luislast, The TXSR494 does not have a phono pre amp input for a turntable. However, if you get a separate pre amp you can connect a turntable to that and then use the RCA inputs on the TXSR 494 receiver. But if you are wanting a receiver that supports a phono input built-in you would have to go with TXNR696 or higher in the Onkyo Receiver line. Thank you Onkyo

Q: QuestionHow can I use a USB FLASH DRIVE on this receiver?(1 answer)
A: AnswerThis unit has a USB connection on the back panel. See photos. It has the ability to be set to supply power out to whatever is connected or not, also. I just connected a USB cord for Apple products to it and leave it hanging off to the side of the unit for ease of use. You would have to plug USB Stick into the back (need easy access to rear pane) or get an extension cable and connect that like I did and leave it hanging to the side for easy access.Answered by EastTexasTrav

- A: AnswerHello Tombc, For the TV's remote to control the receiver’s volume you would have to turn on the HDMI CEC within the receiver’s menu. You would do the same within the tv’s menu by turning on the HDMI CEC for the receiver and the tv to communicate. For more information, you can check page 33 of the TXSR494 manual. Thank you Onkyo

- A: AnswerHello LeeLee, The TXSR494 has dual zone function but it is called Zone B. With Zone B, you can adjust the volume but it will be a same source that would be playing in the main room. If you are looking to have a different source on another zone you would have to go with the TXNR6100 and up for the zone 2 function. That function would then allow you to play a separate source from the main room. Thank you Onkyo

Great Equipment!
I don’t really know much about surroundsound. But when we bought a new TV, it was clear that we had to upgrade our 25+ year old receiver, as it was not working with any of the new TVs. We have the older version of this at our other house and it had been a fantastic piece of equipment so we decided to upgrade to the new one for our new house. It was super easy to set up with our new TV and I really love that you can actually connect it to the HDMI arc and set it up using the TV display. Connecting it to our hardwired Bose surround sound speakers was incredibly easy, and the audio quality that this transmits is perfect. We have it connected via optical cable and it works great! The only issue that we have with this is, the TV does not sync with the remote. So, we have to keep both remotes out to operate tv/volume. I think it’s more the TVs problem than the receiver but I do wish that they would work together like our old system did.

Good buy for the price
I didn’t want a pricy receiver to listen only to FM radio and LP’s. This one seemed to fit the bill. The only issue I have with it is that it would not connect to my soundbar via bluetooth, so I ended up having to purchase separate speakers. Otherwise, we’re happy with it.
