Amperage drops in the line after a certain distance and 30' is probably a safe distance to allow your SP to work best. Since surges come from many places other than lightning, you can better protect yourself by making sure your home, telephone, and cable wiring is properly grounded, and whenever possible, use a dedicated line for your computer and devices.
