I certainly would not categorize the fan as "loud." There are times when it kicks into full gear and you can hear it but it isn't obnoxious or distracting or anything like that. After the temperature reaches a certain level, the fan kicks down to a lower gear and becomes much more quiet. The hard drive is certainly not loud either. I'm really happy with the computer as I am using it for general use (email, word documents, browsing web sites for banking, shopping, news, etc.).
