It would run Protools, Cakewalk’s Sonar, Ableton, and just about any other DAW, but not very well (weaker ones such as Audacity would be an exception). I would strongly recommend a more powerful processor than a dual-core i5 for such demanding multi-thread softwares. Especially as you begin to layer various effects during the editing process. At least find yourself a quad-core i5. As far as recording music, a sound card is preferable for playback, but not necessary, the biggest concern will be your audio interface, what you’re recording, and microphone techniques. Probably too late for your question but hopefully this helps someone else who’s just starting out!
