“I have an older TV without hdmi arc or an optical port. It just has normal hdmi. If all I'm doing is watching stuff off the roku itself, will the soundbar work? I'm not trying to get sound off a game system or anything else.”

I would recommend just getting a regular Roku then, you wouldn't get any sound benefit since you don't have HDMI ARC or Optical. Hope this helps...

You can still use the Roku - 2.0-Channel Smart Soundbar on an older TV with a standard HDMI port and no optical audio out port .However the Roku Smart Soundbar will only output audio from what is being streamed from the Roku Smart Soundbar itself in that scenario. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I recently bought one of these and ran into the same problem. It wouldn’t let me set it up. By accident I discovered if you set the device up with a tv that has the necessary connection methods, you can then use it on your regular hdmi tv.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Well, If you get one of these things you should look into getting later model TV with the compatible outlets. You can certainly use it as a giant Roku box. But the sound these things output is really great. Add the Roku woofer and it becomes sublime. voice is easier to understand. There is a stereo effect that is really great. But the giant Roku soundbar you own will work as you suggested. I also use the Trendnet Ethernet to USB dongle (10/100MB) Roku recommends works (I get 90 Mb/sec which is greater than what I get off of wireless )(I am not a wireless fan) ( I also wear a tinfoil hat (just joking)).
