No and Yes. To access the Roku application itself you do not need an additional subscription, but you will only have access to the free content/channels. The most used applications like netflix, sling, hulu, and amazon video, require individual subscriptions through each of those entities. You probably already have your answer, but to directly answer the question.....NO, you do not need to buy an extra subscription for ROKU. I typed in what I was looking for that I would not get with cable or regular tv stations. They came up free of any charge and I am very happy!! Once you get your tv you will be amazed at what you can get with out cable. All I have is the internet. I choose to use Netflix which has a monthly charge, and local stations. I use YouTube free as well. Very happy!
