This unit has two external audio settings for the headphone out jack. One will allow the external speakers to be controlled by the TV remote (and of course separately by the external audio unit itself ), this will allow the TV remote to control both the volume and mute functions of the external speakers. A second option sets an external fixed volume, in which case the external speakers are controlled by the separate audio unit. It also allows an option which will automatically disconnect the internal speakers when an external speaker is connected or set the internal speakers to a fixed ON or OFF setting .
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No. We use a soundbar, and the audio still works when the TV volume is set to 0.

The headphones/Audio Out jack is the same jack, so yes, if a soundbar has an analog/RCA type jack and cable (some only have the digital optical type connections), you can run the volume and mute for the external speakers with the TV remote. Yay. From Insignia's site: "Headphones/Audio Out—You can use the headphones/AUDIO OUT jack on your TV to connect headphones, a home theater system, sound bar, or external speaker system. When a device is connected to the headphones/AUDIO OUT jack, the TV speakers are muted. You can select: "Headphones/Audio Out Variable—Select this option to use the remote control that came with your TV to control the audio from headphones, a home theater system, a sound bar, or an external speaker system you connected to the Headphones/AUDIO OUT jack." They don't say if using the TV remote for sound control works with the DIGITAL outlet, so probably not, so you'd have to use the soundbar's own remote or whatever remote runs your external sound system if there's only a digital connection jack/port.

Please try again later.Terraphysics, if you're out there...would like a more complete answer to the question...Is it only the headphone jack outlet that has the options you mention, and not the normal audio out jacks? If you hook up a SOUNDBAR, which of course will not plug into the headphone jack(?), will the TV remote still mute the soundbar and change the volume? Seems most new TV remotes won't, but that surely should be an option so you don't have to fool with 2 remotes all the time, or switch a 'universal' remote between Aux and TV multiple times during viewing to mute/change volume and then change channels. If it's only the headphone out jack that allows those mentioned options, are there any soundbars or small speakers that can use that jack? Even if just the TV remote's mute button would mute the digital audio out jack, that would be very helpful, but don't see any so far that say they do that. Why is that so hard to add? I had a 1990 Mitsubishi 20" TV that would POWER small external speakers AND work their volume and mute with the TV remote, and now this long after they can't work at least an external speaker mute function into the circuit boards to whichever audio outlet?
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.yes it is since I don't have an external sound system attached to this tv
