“I would like to connect Fire tv. The existing HDMI is connected to my tv (ARC). I know I can connect an optical from the tv to the hts to get sound, but wont that take all the sound from the tv when not using Fire tv through the optical?”

All you have to do is make sure the Firestick is on when watching tv. You will still get surround sound with any other tv source you are watching
