You've GOT to mount it to the wood studs under the drywall, NOT the drywall itself. Otherwise you WILL have a disaster on your hands at some point, even if you manage to get it to stay up there for now. If your house is less than 50 years old, the studs should be reliably 18" apart. Get yourself a stud finder at Home Depot or whatever; they're inexpensive and will help you locate where to screw in your mounting plate. If the mount doesn't reach the studs on each side, you can put up a piece of plywood, screw IT into the studs as securely as you can, and then screw the mount into the plywood.

My fireplace wall is shared with the garage, so from the basement, they ran cable into the garage then back into the house where the TV was mounted. Because there are studs (2x4's) between the chimney and the drywall, the mount was attached to the 2x4's. They mounted the cable box behind the TV so no wires were visible.
