Generally speaking, when you install a secondary antivirus/firewall program, like Symantec, Trend, etc., the installation process will automatically disable any preexisting antivirus program. So if Defeneder is on, it gets disabled, if McAffe is installed, it get disabled, etc.

However if you need to run an app that Defender has issues with, and you're sure it's safe, you may want to turn off Defender. If you're already using antivirus software, it doesn't make sense to keep Microsoft Defender along, as it will only cause unnecessary bugs and can eat up your PC resources.
