Have not tried VLC player but is available ; one problem you may run into is the device io interfaces are limited and definitely not designed to source power and device (drivers) may not recognize portable hard drive. However my sold state usb flash was recognized so downloading there too a large memory maybe useful assuming you have digital rights. As you suspect the onboard device memory is very limited. I have used a 128GB USB memory with success. Screen is relatively small and medium resolution for AV. BTW thought most ships would have internet ? You may also want to consider power since there are no detachable batteries (built in) with external power recharge unit.
