“So, if I have a secure router password it transfers to the wifi extender? It has not asked for the password and says it is unsecure.”

During the setup process for the Extender, when you select your Wi-Fi network for it to connect to, it also asks for your Wi-Fi password. When you input that password it also becomes the password for your extender.
