“Does this unit play mp3s directly from a thumb drive and if so what size thumb drives does it recognize and how are the songs displayed on the digital readout? thanks in advance”

Yes of course you can plug a USB thumb drive I tom the USB port. Of course it will only play music files like MP3 or WAV etc. the artist and song title are usually stored in the file and appear on the display. I was cautious about having a 1"-2" USB thumb drive sticking out from the face of the unit as I fear it knocked get off and possibly damage the port so I bought one of those micro USB thumb drives that just sticks out a quarter of an inch. You can put a ton of mps files on just a 8gb stick.
