I recommend letting it charge over night the day you buy it. I'm not suggesting that it is a necessity before using it, I'm referencing what was done, prior to its first use, on our part. It had a sufficient amount of charge when it was first turned on. I do not have reason to believe that the amount of time it takes to completely charge it to 100% is that much more time than any other portable device. Therefore my answer is not at all.
