“I want this digital frame to show family photos most of the time but also, once in a while, post a message for a family member (eg, "happy birthday") . Can you make the one, single image display all day or does it just get rotated in with all the pics?”

The only way to make one image show for a long period of time is to hit the pause button on the slideshow. This can be done by touching the photo on touch displays, or with the remote on standard diplays.
