“Are you able to play audio recordings while looking at the photos? Or do you have to do one or the other? I want to be able to have an audio recording playing while being able to see the photos”

You can do both. Go into Settings -> Album Settings and make sure play audio in background is ON. Then put your .mp3 or .wav files onto an SD card or USB thumb drive (32GB or smaller) and insert into the frame. The frame can play the audio while showing your slideshow.
