You can use it singular and yes it pairs easily with the echo dot as well.

I have a few dots around the house along with a few Echo's and a Show in different rooms. I use the dots to turn on lights where I do not have an echo. The dot will also play music, however the speaker quality is not what the Show or Echo produces.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You can purchase the 2nd Gen Echo stand alone. The Dot is just a smaller speaker but performs the same functions. They will work together when you want to play music on all devices at the same time or want to make Echo-to-Echo calls.
