An Amazon account is needed in order to download apps. It does not have to be an Amazon Prime account.

All you need is a standard Amazon account, a prime account is not required. A prime account allows you additional privileges for free that you would have to otherwise pay for with a standard account. Whatever apps you download will be charged to the accounts attached form of payment.

You do not need an Amazon Prime account. The only thing you need an Amazon Prime account for, is to view the Amazon Prime content. You can still use Netflix, YouTube and every other app with a regular Amazon account.

It comes with a few apps already loaded but you can add more. Prime is not necessary but some are pay apps so you will need a credit card attached to your account to play and watch shows that require a fee.
