No you can't do what you said. You need to plug the Amazon Fire Stick into a HDMI port NOT a USB port. If you have prime and a free HDMI port then yes you can just plug in the Amazon Fire Stick. Run through the set up and view Prime movies and also rent of buy the movie. Note that you do need to also have a plug the Amazon Fire Stick into a electric outlet. You might be able to plug that into your USB port but the do not recommend it. I did it and it worked fine for the power supply. But your question was can you just plug it into the USB port and that is not what you need to plug it into. It goes into a HDMI port.

When you want to use it, switch your tv to the HDMI port the stick is connected to. I bought mine soley for Amazon Prime, but I'm also using some more apps available for it. One is Netflix for the 30 day free trial. Everything works great for me. If you have a watchlist set up for Prime, it will show on the stick. I have mine connected to an HDMI port on my A/V receiver. Prime movies play fine; picture and sound quality are terrific. Very pleased here with it.
