• Short answer is no you don't really need it if you already have an online streaming service like Netflix, Hbo Now, Showtime etc but if you don't have one, then you can access tons of shows and movies on Amazon Prime plus get access to ebooks, music and free 2 day express shipping.

• With Prime Membership you can stream your TV shows, movies and music to your TV rather than having to connect your computer to it to watch and hear this content. I am a prime member so I have certain Prime exclusives benefits. You can also use other subscription services with the FireTV stick. It's really a good thing to have and better than chromecast because it comes with it's own remote. I think there is even an android app to use to control the Fire TV stick.
