“Monitor is connected to PC with HDMI cable. If I connect external speakers to monitor audio output with stereo cable, there is no sound. If I connect speakers directly to PC, there is sound.”

I am not currently setup in a way to easily check this but it could be that you would have to select the monitor as the audio output in the Windows task bar "Select Playback Device".
