Thank you for inquiry. The joule rating is the surge protection rating on the unit. This unit would have a 180-joule rating. The 2.3 hours the unit references on the box is referring to the runtime that the unit would provide if the UPS were to go to battery. It would not affect the joule rating of the UPS.

However, it is based on time response of the surge protection and is not used as part of accepted ANSI standards related to surge protection because the "time" associated with this valve can be selected to make it look as though there is a higher Joule rating, while not really providing for additional surge protection. Note: Joule has nothing to do with watt-hours.
