Inasmuch as a generator is not connected to the electrical grid, there is no need of this device to begin with. As for using it with an extension cord, as long as it is heavy duty 3-wire, sure.

Generally we wouldn't recommend connecting our surge protectors to an extension cord because it can cause the surge protector to not be able to shunt any excess surges to ground. I would just make sure the generator is grounded correctly and the cord is rated to handle the surge protector.
