I'm not sure about the open box ones, but this specific model is the 2017 model. I have one. It's great. The open box model means it was just used as a display and may have very minor cosmetic flaws, because of people trying them out and them being on display. It comes with MacOS Mojave out of the box if you buy it new, but if it was an open box model, it may have been updated later. But nonetheless, it can be updated via the App Store by searching for it. To verify the MacOS version, you can click the Apple Logo in the top left corner, then click 'About this Mac' and it will tell you the year, MacOS version and all. Good luck!
