I have hooked up an additional monitor to a PC, but my 27 inch screen on my work iMac was superio. What I would recommend is that rather than add a second monitor, go with the iMac 27-inch screen. It is a vastly superior screen anyway; at my age and at the work I now do, I just didn’t need it. You can always bifurcate the 27-inch screen and work on comparing two full documents or operations. Ask the Best Buy staff in the Apple area to explain how. They are knowledgeable and quite helpful. They can also show you the differences. If you are too far from either a Best Buy or Apple Store, then you can ask online.
