“when in my ears and I am talking my voice echos back into my head like I'm in a tunnel. Is this common? It is a lot harder to hear others and irritating to me. I have the pro now but had the regular ones before.”

you have transparency on. On the control center force touch the volume button and you will see transparency mode on, just tap it off and it should fix the issue.

I have noticed this happening if I get too far away from my phone, I have bad service, or another Bluetooth device is connected (car stereo). If those factors are eliminated, they work seamlessly for me. I hope this helps.

AirPods Pro manufactured before Oct 2020 have a known defect. Some make loud crackling noises that make it impossible to hear. Not sure about the echo you are experiencing. Apple is replacing them for free.
