A:AnswerYes. The Bluetooth speaker that has the most recent connection (i.e. walking to your car using AirPods, turn vehicle on and Bluetooth connection will transfer to car since it connected the most recently. Once car is off and connection lost will transfer back to AirPods
A:AnswerYou should be able to find the serial number either on the receipt/invoice or on your box that the AirPods came in.
Once you get a new case, I'd recommend going into Settings > General > About > (Name of AirPods) and then it will show you the serial number for future use.

And best buy doesn't give you a code when you purchase the airpods it just gives you directions to apple music to get the three months free. If you have any apple product you can go and do this any time.
