“Does anyone know if I should be able to pull up my gmail email account from my IPhone onto a SONY TV (android) with this device? I want to watch video from a link to Google Drive that I'll be receiving in email. Hoping this will do the trick. Thanks.”

Yes this should work, as long as your SONY TV has a VGA connection. By default your iPhone display will be mirrored on the TV.
