I bought IPad 6th today and Apple Pencil 2nd gen. Before I opened pencil I checked Apple website and it says it's not compatible. 6th Gen IPad only works with 1st gen pencil. Will be returning the pencil unopened. Hope this helps, as I had the same question.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No, the Apple Pencil 2nd gen will only work with the newest iPads the 11’ and 12.9’ that just came out. You can use the 1st gen Apple Pencil and it will work just fine. It’s also $30 cheaper.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.So far, Apple Pencil Gen. 2 is only compatible with iPad Pro 3rd Gen. The older models and the latest generation of regular iPad that still have Lighting ports work with the 1st Gen. Pencil.
