No you don’t need an application, it comes w a charging port that fits onto any lighting cable. I suggest using it with notes before moving to the harder stuff like keynote and pages.

It does not come with a charger, but it comes with a small cable/adapter that you can use to then plug it into a normal wall charger. Or you can charge it by plugging it into the charging port of your tablet. No need to install an application; it connects via Bluetooth.

Also you can plug this directly into your iPad to charge it. No app to get the pencil to work, but there are plenty of apps that directly support the pencil and use it’s features beautifully.
