No, the Apple Pencil isn’t necessary to operate your iPad. But, it does enhance the user experience with the “pen and paper” style of writing. It’s also really helpful if you’re planning on using it for digital art or note taking.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You do not need the pen to operate the iPad! The pen just allows for more precise clicks or better eligibility for writing (if you want to use your IPad to take notes).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It’s really just an extra. However, for note taking, highlighting, drawing and coloring apps, it’s nice to have. I’ve had one since I’ve had my iPad 6th gen model, and I’ve enjoyed it. There’s also an Insignia pen for $40 that will do the same thing, but you lose certain Apple-only features. There’s also an LED light on the Insignia that I find distracting, and you also can’t truly tell how much charge your pencil has. With the Apple Pencil your iPad will tell you in the Apple Pencil tab in settings, and you can set up an Apple Pencil battery widget on your Home Screen. If you don’t mind paying extra for the Apple features then certainly invest in the Apple Pencil.
