“I see at the bottom of the page several items you might also need with this monitor. I understand the need for the stand. The next item I see is a VESA adapter. Is the adapter absolutely required because I don't see it in the photos. Please explain.”

You will either need the stand or the VESA adapter to hook to an existing VESA mount. You don't need to purchase both.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The vesa adapter is not required if you buy the stand. The vesa adapter is used to install the monitor with a universal vesa stand or arm.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.The VESA adapter is used when you want to pair the display with a third party stand or wall mount. If you do not buy the matching Apple stand, you WILL need to buy the VESA adapter, as the back of the display has no mounting points other than the magnetic tilt-lock mechanism that is used with the Apple stand. So either way when you buy this display, you must choose between a $1000 stand or $200 mount adapter at time of purchase.
