A magnetic strip along the edge of the cover. It works great and the cover has a great feel to it.

It's magnetic. So it stays in the case by magnetizing to the Ipad itself. It's slick, so if you do want to take it away from the case, it's very easy. But at the same time, it's a strong enough magnet to keep it attached.

The IPad is secured to the Folio by its magnetic qualities. We're talking the IPad Air 4 here and the 11" IPad Pro.

The new IPAD AIR 4 and the compatible smart folio have very strong magnets. I had the older Apple two piece folio set, each piece sold separately, and the magnetic covers kept folio off. In this new setup, both the IPAD and Folio cover have magnets and it locks securely in place.

Due to the design, the IPAD will not stand on its own, with this cover. 
The ridges are for the look, not for practicality.
