You can type with it on your lap, yes. As for replacing a laptop.... yes and no. Depends what kind of work you want to do, but for 90% of users, this can be an acceptable laptop replacement. If you need to do things like heavy coding or need a lot of internal storage, it might not be the best way. But with the ability to use external storage and iCloud, it makes that problem less of an issue.
