No, you do not. I have smart TVs running webOS which is amazing and nearly as good as most of the streaming boxes such as AppleTV. if those are the only services you use, I would skip the streaming box. However, if you want to purchase/rent movies from iTunes you would need an Apple TV. The Apple TV offers more apps than the TV does giving you more possibilities. If you are not interested in those, I'd skip it. Same as the others like Amazon Fire TV or Roku.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Not really unless, like me, you already have Apple and iTunes integrated into everything else you have in your home. I have movies in iTunes that I can’t access from TV apps but it seems like even that will be a problem that is solved once the Movies Anywhere app is fully integrated. Apple TV 4K does rent and upgrade your currently owned movies (except for Disney) to 4K. And 4K movies purchased through iTunes will still be $19.99 just like the regular HD context.

Please try again later.Not unless your iTunes is aware of the location of your movies, songs and pictures, which have to be in a compatible format, and the computer is ON with Home Sharing turned ON, so you can access them. Another reason is keeping the human-machine interface familiar to one's less techno-savvy spouse.
