Not everything is free, but with subscriptions comes higher resolution at a fairly reliable rate. In general, if you can see a particular show using over-the-air TV, then you can probably access it for free, although many (e.g., major networks) require that you "sign in" to use their service.

But you have to have a cable subscription to use, say, HBO. Or you can purchase an HBO subscription if you don't have it with your cable plan. Same with Showtime, etc. Hulu., CBS Access, etc. all have their own subscriptions, but you never have to pay twice.
