“I plan to hook an Apple TV 4K hooked into HD AV Receiver - outputting to 1080P projector. If I buy UHD versions of movies from iTunes or Vudu - will I be able to play them on my projector (obviously not at 4K resolution) and still get Dolby ATMOS?”

I do this all the time using movies I have purchased through Itunes. I have not used VUDU. I use my Apple TV for some Directv programming and it works perfect.

I connected my 4K Apple TV directly to tv(projector) and used Apple play Bluetooth connection to AVR audio. It is an option on the Apple TV control panel audio and picture settings. For full surround sound effect.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.If your AVR supports Dolby Atmos it will. If your TV/Projector supports HDR you will also have the benefit of HDR from the UHD versions. Nice benefit for 1080p owners.
