You can use the watch with or without an additional service - if you want to receive calls from your watch without having your phone with you, you will in fact need to add cellular service to your watch. It’s about $10 additional a month -

Yes. Verizon it’s $10. Calls will forward to the watch provided the watch is ON. This is key. The phone must be on for the watch to work. Not much data is used.

I haven’t contacted my phone service yet about it but. Basically I’m using it as if it’s bluetooth I can call and text with my watch as long as I’m in range of my phone.

Your cell phone service provider might charge you an activation fee in addition to monthly charges for the watch; do check with them and hope this helps!
