Yes it has an activity program that you can use and it will monitor your steps

Yes this watch keeps track of your steps as long as you have your phone with you. If you want the watch for this feature I would go for series 2 or 3 since Both of those have built-in GPS so you do not need to carry the phone with you.Also all series come with both cellular and non-cellular usually the non-cellular is about $100 less
