• The modem is designed to be vertical with the foot pads on the bottom. However, only one side of the modem is vented to I don't why you couldn't lay it down on the non-vented side.

• The position of the modem has no real effect on performance. it can be positioned vertically or horizontally,.

• It does have mounting slots on one of the sides. If you were to lay it down, lay it down on the mounting slots to avoiding over heating.

• Not sure what the manufacturer recommends but mine sits horizontal, vertical, even upside down and sometimes on its face and I've had no issues. My kids sometimes move it around when playing and it still seems to function just fine.
